School System

In Brazil, the education system is divided into three levels: Fundamental, Secondary and Higher education. Education is provided by the Federal Council of Education (Conselho Federal de Educacao) Education at public institutions is free for all citizens. Grades are referred to as “years,” and there are nine of these “years” in total.

Fundamental Education (Ensino Fundamental) is compulsory for all children aged 6 to 14. It includes a core curriculum that consists of Portuguese, History, Geography, Science, Mathematics, Arts and Physical Education. Each regional educational system can supplement this core curriculum with more diversified subject matter to meet the needs of their region an the abilities of their students.

The Fundamental Education system is divided into two stages: Ensino Fundamental is for years 1 to 5, typically taught by a single teacher for all of these classes. In the second part, Ensino Fundamental II, specific for years 6 to 9, there are different teachers for each subject. At this level, students are introduced to new foreign languages as compulsory courses, usually in English or Spanish.

The school year is 200 days minimum, by National Education Bases and Guidelines Law, though individual schools can set their academic calendar to suit their region, particularly around agriculture seasons.

Secondary Education (Ensino Medio) is a three year programme open to students who have completed their Fundamental Education. The core curriculum consists of Portuguese, (including the study of the language and the literature of both Portuguese and Brazilian literature), foreign languages (English, Spanish, French), History, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Philosophy and Sociology. Professional training is an option in the second and third years of the Secondary Education.

Higher Education is our version of the post-secondary level, including graduate degrees. The Brazilian public has access to tuition-free universities throughout the country. Brazil offers a fascinating culture and an incredible landscape. Some of the greatest natural treasures of world are in this country. The opportunities to explore both make this country a destination full of exciting experiences, with real-world opportunities.
