Located in Northern Europe between the North Sea and the Baltic, it includes the Faroe Islands and Greenland in the North Atlantic. It has a coastline of 7,314 kms and is made up of 406 islands, 78 of which are inhabited.
School System
In Denmark, public school is known as “Folkeskole” and is compulsory for students from age 6 to 16. Education is provided by the Danish education system. Primary school, called “den Danske Folkeskole” – Danish Public School – is from Kindergarten to Grade Ten. Grade Ten is an optional choice for students. Approximately 99% of the student population attend Folkeskole.
Alternative schools, called free schools (Friskole) and private schools, (Privatskole) including Christian or Waldorf are options for education, but these schools operate outside the municipal-provided education system.
After graduation from Folkeskole, students have a variety of options available to pursue their education, with a range of specialties. This period of study would be equivalent to Canada’s secondary school (high school) system, but with an emphasis specific to future career goals. Gymnasium is an academically oriented upper secondary education. Higher Preparatory Examination is similar to Gymnasium, but with one-year less of study. Higher Technical Examination Programme focuses on mathematics and engineering, while Higher Commercial Examination Programme focuses on trade and business, training people through apprenticeship and teaching. All of these programmes aim at qualifying students for post-secondary education in university and college.
Post-secondary education is tuition-free for students. Approximately 86% of students pursue university/college. Another 41% proceed with further academic study past their Bachelors Degree.
