The American public education system is run by State and local governments, regulated by the United States Department of Education. School is compulsory from age 6 to 18, in most States, or until the end of grade 12. Students must get their education via public schools, State-certified private schools or approved home school programs.

Education is divided into public, junior and high-school, with grade levels set to ages. Students must complete high school and take their SAT examinations before being eligible to pursue post-secondary education.

The United States is a large country with exciting regions, all different and unique from one state to another. With a proud history and a leading role in influencing the world’s culture, from media to commercialism, the United States is an excellent location to study abroad and see the opportunities for education at some of the finest institutions in the world.

School System

American public education is operated by state and local governments, regulated by the United States Department of Education through restrictions on federal grants. Children are required in most states to attend school from the age of six or seven (generally, kindergarten or first grade) until they turn eighteen (generally bringing them through twelfth grade, the end of high school); some states allow students to leave school at sixteen or seventeen.

Compulsory education requirements can generally be satisfied by attending public schools, state-certified private schools, or an approved home school program. In most public and private schools, education is divided into three levels: elementary school, junior high school (often called middle school), and high school (sometimes referred to as secondary education). In almost all schools at these levels, children are divided by age groups into grades, ranging from kindergarten (followed by first grade) for the youngest children in elementary school, up to twelfth grade, which is the final year of high school. The exact age range of students in these grade levels varies slightly from area to area.
